I am appalled at the idea of raising the beer tax to help eliminate drunken driving. Instead, keep the current tax and force anyone caught driving under the influence to pay for any treatment necessary.
Why make the 92 percent of Wisconsin's drivers who drive responsibly pay for the 8 percent who don't? This simply doesn't add up, and in reality it's just another way for big government to dig into responsible people's wallets. People should be accountable for their actions and not make their bad choices the taxpayers' problem.
Another reason this is a bad idea is because Wisconsin's government has shown itself fiscally irresponsible with these types of taxes. For example, a few years ago Wisconsin received settlement money from the big tobacco companies to fund anti-smoking programs. This money was mismanaged by our elected officials and now Wisconsin is facing a giant tax increase again in tobacco products.
History has a way of repeating itself, and it is only a matter of time before beer would see the same fate.
